Four Triangle school districts have canceled after-school activities, and three said they are either dismissing students early or advised of delays during pick-up, in light of possible storms in the area.
Durham Public Schools said on Friday morning they would dismiss students two hours early.
“Due to forecasts of a risk of severe storms and dangerous winds this afternoon, all DPS schools will dismiss two hours early today, Friday, May 6,” the school district said in a Facebook post.
All after-school programs and extracurricular activities have been canceled, the school district said.
The Wake County Public School System said schools would not close early but possible storms could disrupt dismissal and cause delays during pick-up. Officials also said that all after-school activities had been canceled.
“If a storm is passing through the vicinity of your child’s school during dismissal, the school may hold students in the building until the storm passes,” officials said on the WCPSS website. “Buses and contract transportation will also likely be delayed.”
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools also plan to dismiss students at normal times, spokesperson Andy Jenks said in an email, but all after-school and evening events have been canceled or rescheduled.
Students at Orange County Schools will also be dismissed at regular times, but all athletic events, practices and other after-school activities have been canceled, spokesperson Amanda Bunch said in an email.
The National Weather Service said multiple rounds of storms are possible throughout the Triangle and central North Carolina, mainly after 3 p.m.
The region is expected to see less than one-tenth of rainfall during the day, with more rain possible overnight.
Durham County, along with Wake and Orange, has been elevated to an “enhanced risk” for severe weather, according to forecasters. That means there is a chance of “persistent and/or widespread” storms, including some that could be considered “intense.”
