Biden opens eyes with ‘trust the science’ agenda (L.A. PARKER COLUMN) | News

Good heavens, Miss Sakamoto, you’re beautiful.

Musician Thomas Dolby created a mad scientist character who offered that assessment of laboratory assistant Sakamoto in an entertaining performance of “She Blinded Me With Science” hit.

Science! As a pandemic circles Earth and boomerangs with variants from Brazil, United Kingdom and South Africa, President Joe Biden kept his promise to trust Science! for U.S. policy involving climate change, business and even achieving social equity.

A Science-Business article trumpeted the arrival of big thinkers and International Geophysical Year (I.G.Y.) possibilities.

“In one of the most significant departures from the Trump Administration, President-elect Joe Biden vowed to make science a central theme of his administration — enlisting scientists to solve problems at home and across the globe, and giving them unprecedented influence in his administration,” Science Business heralded.

Biden named Eric Lander both his science adviser and head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

Lander, 63, served as president and founding director of the Broad Institute jointly run by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The mathematician turned molecular biologist, holds cabinet power as Biden reversed anti-Science! brainwaves transmitted by President Donald Trump.

Biden rejoined the Paris Climate Accord, halted U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization and ratcheted efforts to control and defeat COVID-19.

Biden, in a declaration of war, pledged a new allegiance.

“As president, I’ll pay great attention to science and scientists,” Biden said in an online briefing.

Biden, 78, sounds youthfully progressive with his intention to support scientific investigation of issues. Trust the Science!

One can almost hear singer Donald Fagen romancing Science! as a potent elixir for the people, setting us free from ourselves.

In the aforementioned I.G.Y. effort, Fagen envisions,

“A just machine to make big decisions, programmed by fellows with compassion and vision. We’ll be clean when their work is done, we’ll be eternally free yes and eternally young. (What a beautiful world this will be, what a glorious time to be free).

Biden has formed a faithful bond with Science!, one that parallels his devoted Catholic upbringing. That juxtaposition raises a question whether God and Science! can coexist.

Scientists, once considered heretics by religious factions, including Catholic authorities, have evolved into powerbroker heroes.

A nation originally built on religious teachings and a belief in God or other deities, pivots toward Science! and scientists.

Of course, test tube movers and shakers made a joyful noise about Biden’s embrace of — Science!

God has been shown the door, exiting stage right as the Doomsday Clock tiktoks toward human destruction.

While COVID-19 and climate change deserve preferential attention, Science! should impact national and world issues relating to poverty, food insecurity, racism and other chronic problems.

Still, no matter what conclusions or solutions Science! provides, change materializes through individual action.

Former President Trump and many of his most ardent followers denied Science! and contacted COVID-19 in so-called super spreader events.

While a COVID-19 vaccine exists, Vaxxers and others including a significant number of African Americans, push back against injections.

Science! which played a major role in secret experiments performed on Blacks and others, faces a challenge in establishing trust with millions.

Staying close to God here with prayers that power from a supernatural source supports Science! which in turn develops a cure. Hopefully, authorities produce a distribution plan that offers vaccines to everyone.

In God and scientists we trust.
